Moles

Mole assessment

It’s important to regularly check your skin for changes in moles or freckles, as these could be early signs of skin cancer, such as melanoma. Below is guidance on what to look out for, along with steps you can take to monitor changes in your moles.

What to Look for in Moles:

A mole or freckle that changes over time could be a sign of concern. The key signs to look for are:

  1. Asymmetry:

    • The mole is uneven in shape. One half looks different from the other half.

  2. Borders:

    • The edges of the mole are irregular, blurred, or jagged.

  3. Colour:

    • The mole has multiple colours, such as shades of brown, black, red, white, or blue.

    • An uneven colour or dark spots in the mole may also be a sign of concern.

  4. Diameter:

    • If the mole is larger than 6mm (the size of a pencil eraser), it may require closer attention.

  5. Elevation:

    • The mole becomes raised above the surrounding skin, or it may develop an uneven surface.

  6. Itching, Bleeding, or Pain:

    • If the mole begins to itch, bleed, or become painful, it may indicate a problem.

    • Any new or unusual symptoms such as tenderness or discomfort should be noted.

  7. Changes in Texture:

    • If the mole becomes scaly, crusty, or starts to change in texture, this could indicate an issue.

  8. New Moles:

    • Keep an eye on any new moles or growths that appear after the age of 30, as this is less common.

What to Do:

It’s important to take action and monitor any moles that are showing signs of change. Follow these steps to monitor your moles safely:

  1. Take Photos:

    • Take a clear photo of any mole you are concerned about. Use a ruler or a coin for scale to help track any changes in size over time.

  2. Review Every 3 Months:

    • After taking your initial photo, review it again every 3 months to check for any changes.

    • Compare the photo with the mole regularly to detect any size, shape, or colour alterations.

  3. When to Contact Us:

    • If you notice any changes that fit the descriptions above (such as shape, size, colour, or symptoms like itching, bleeding, or pain), please contact your GP or your nearest healthcare provider immediately.

    • Early detection is key to successful treatment, so if in doubt, don’t hesitate to seek advice.

Conclusion:

Regularly checking your skin and looking for changes in moles is an important step in protecting your health. By following the advice above and seeking medical advice promptly if any concerning changes occur, you’re taking an active role in maintaining your health and wellbeing.
